The VAT registration number must consist of either 9 or 12 digits. It may sometimes be preceded by two letters.
For example, the following are all valid formats that will be accepted by our system when input into the ‘VAT registration number' field:
- 123456789
- 123456789012
- 123 4567 89
- GB123456789
- GB123456789012
- GB 123 4567 89
Common errors that result in our system being unable to accept the data input into the ‘VAT registration number’ field include:
- Entries that do not consist of either 9 or 12 digits.
- Entries that include punctuation, or other ‘special characters’. For example, the following are not valid formats for the ‘VAT registration number':
- “123456789
- 123456789.
- GB-123 4567 89
- 123456789 07/09/2023
- Entries that consist only of text, such as ‘Not applicable’, ‘N/A’ and ‘Not registered’ or that include text, such as '123456789 agent’.
