Inform Direct have, in line with best internet practice, set a minimum threshold for a password to be considered secure. Simple and common passwords will not be acceptable.

1. The password must be at least 8 characters long.

2. Try to think of a 3 word string which you will remember.  For example:

  • trial balance sheet
  • ham egg chips
  • milk chocolate biscuit

3. As you types the words (without spaces) the security of the new password will be gauged.

4. So taking the example of milk chocolate biscuit:

As you type 'milk' you will see Your password should be at least 8 characters long.

As you type 'milkchocolate' you will see Your password is too easy to guess. Try to avoid common words and patterns.

As you type 'milkchocolatebiscuit' the strength indicator will move to 3 amber bars.

Note: While adding the word 'biscuit' to the words 'milkchocolate' you may briefly see the strength indicator turn green.  This is because the letters 'biscu' are not a recognised word and so a password of 'milkchocolatebiscu' would indeed be very secure but perhaps hard to remember.

Inform Direct will accept a password that is amber strength however if you want to make your password that little bit more secure you can then add a flourish at the end e.g. 2022 or !

So the password 'milkchocolatebiscuit2022' would produce 4 green bars as per the below.

We do not suggest you use the above example passwords for your account but instead choose a 3 word string which will be easy for you to remember.  You can of course use a more traditional form of password consisting of upper and lowercase letters together with punctuation marks but the password must as a minimum meet the 3 amber bars threshold to be acceptable.
